ABOUT THIS ROOM
Kourin Ogata was one of the greatest artists in the Edo era.Kourin introduced innovative compositions and paintings to the elegant and traditional Yamato-e style, and brought the Rimpa school of art to great success.
Born the second son of a kimono merchant in Kyoto, he left behind bright and decorative works, primarily for the wealthy merchants of Kyoto.
In the midst of economic hardship, he moved from Kyoto to Edo (now Tokyo) and returned to Kyoto after five years.
The Fujin-Raijin (The Wind and Thunder Gods) and the Kohaku Baizu Byobu (Red and White Plum Blossoms)were painted after his return to Kyoto.
Although Kourin was active as a painter for only 15 years, from the age of 44 to 59, many of his works have been designated as national treasures or important cultural properties.
Among his works, we have selected (1) Fujin-Raijin (The Wind and Thunder Gods), (2) Kohaku Baizu Byobu (Red and White Plum Blossoms), and (3) Kakitsubatazu Byobu (Swallow Iris Flowers).
Both “Kohaku Baizu Byobu (Red and White Plum Blossoms)” and “Kakitsubatazu Byobu (Swallow Iris Flowers)” were certified for national treasures and are wonderful works of art.
This spacious bedroom is surrounded by Kourin's beautiful Yamato-e paintings, making it feel like you are at a museum.
The Kakitsubata (iris) flowers in front of you is a refreshing scene with the blue of the iris flowers and the green of the leaves against the gold background.
The "Fujin-Raijin (Wind God and Thunder God)" is believed to prevent natural disasters by using their power to manipulate wind and rain, and to bring good harvests. It is also believed that the great winds and lightning drive away evil spirits and protect gods, Buddha, and good citizens.
Take a commemorative photo in the Fujin-Raijin Room, and may the Fujin-Raijin protect you throughout your trip.
In the Japanese-style room, there are gorgeous kimonos on display. Enjoy this delicate beauty of Japan.
